Exposed Fastener Metal Roof Panels by Exceptional Metals

Exceptional Metals emerged in 2003 as an offshoot of Duro-Last Roofing, primarily producing top-tier metal components for roofing systems. This strategic move was part of Duro-Last's plan to integrate vertically, allowing them to offer a more comprehensive suite of roofing solutions. Over the years, the company has experienced steady growth and development. A significant milestone occurred in 2013 when a state-of-the-art 89,000-square-foot manufacturing facility opened in Carrollton, Texas, serving both parent companies, Duro-Last and Exceptional Metals. Five years later, the company marked its 15th anniversary, a testament to its success and longevity in the industry. Today, Exceptional Metals operates under the Duro-Last umbrella, primarily based in Saginaw, Michigan. The company has diversified its product range to include metal roofing accessories like edge materials and gutter systems. As of 2024, Exceptional Metals has solidified its position as a key player in the metal roofing accessories market, boasting a substantial following on professional networking platforms and maintaining a reputation for delivering high-quality products designed for superior roofing solutions.

The EM PBR Panel system demonstrates remarkable versatility in snow guard installation, offering various options to suit diverse needs and project specifications. This versatile platform supports various snow guard types, including screw-mounted rail systems like SnoBar, ColorBar, and the PBR-specific SnoCleat. Additionally, it accommodates multiple stainless steel SnowCatchers featuring unique designs such as the Standard Rectangle, Fleur-de-lis, Sun Burst, Maple Leaf, Mustang, and Kodiak. Most polycarbonate snow guard models are compatible with these panels, allowing for either adhesive or screw-down mounting methods. The only exception is the Snojax I, which must be screwed down. When using adhesive for polycarbonate models, it's essential to use the industry-standard Surebond SB-190 adhesive. However, this particular adhesive is unsuitable for metal pad-style snow guards. For optimal performance, smaller snow guards should go between the minor ribs in the center of the panel. However, specific models like the Snojax II and Icejax II require off-center placement, consistently straddling either the left or right minor rib. It's crucial to avoid attaching snow guards or rail systems directly to the panel's high ribs. Instead, they should be secured through the low, flat sections of the panel into a sturdy underlying structure to ensure maximum stability and strength. For a more in-depth exploration of this, we encourage you to refer to the blog post "Mounting Snow Guards on the High Ribs or the Panel Flats: Which is Correct?"

EM Stormproof Metal Panel system offers a versatile approach to snow retention, accommodating various installation preferences and product options. Users can select from a range of snow guards that can be either adhered or mechanically fastened to the panel. For instance, the polycarbonate SnoBlox Deuce and SnowBreaker models mount between the minor ribs using either adhesive or screws. We offer several metal snow guard options, including the SnoCleat PBR and several different SnowCatcher shapes. Installers secure these guards with screws in the flat center of the panel. The system also incorporates specialized guards like the Snojax I and Icejax I, designed to straddle the minor ribs between the 9-inch major ribs. While the Icejax I is compatible with adhesive and screw-based installation methods, the Snojax I only requires mechanical fastening. For a more comprehensive snow management solution, combine the Panel-Loc Panel with Tall ColorBrackets and mechanical fasteners to support snow rail systems like the aluminum ColorBar PBR and galvanized SnoBar PBR. This array of options ensures that users can tailor their snow retention strategy to their specific needs and preferences, providing adequate protection against snow and ice accumulation.

EM LS-36™ Insulated Roof & Wall Panel

Exceptional Metals offers a versatile and efficient insulated metal panel system, the EM LS-36™, designed for roofing and wall applications. This innovative product boasts several advantages, including rapid installation and assembly, which can significantly reduce project timelines. The panel's insulated construction provides superior energy efficiency and thermal performance compared to non-insulated alternatives, potentially leading to long-term cost savings for building owners. While the standard exterior finish is smooth, the EM LS-36™ can be customized to meet various aesthetic requirements, making it suitable for multiple architectural, commercial, industrial, and institutional projects. The panel's through-fastened attachment method contributes to its quick installation process. This panel features 1.25" high ribs on 12" on-center spacing. The insulation is available in 1.5", 2", 2.5", 3", 4", 5", and 6" thicknesses. Exceptional Metals generally offers this panel in 22, 24, and 26 gauge options. See the Snow Guards Compatibility Chart for Exceptional Metals EM LS-36 Insulated Screw Down Metal Roof Panels.

The EM LS-36™ Insulated Roof & Wall Panel system is compatible with limited snow guard options due to its insulation. Because of this panel's insulation thickness, we do not recommend screw-down individual pad-style guards or rail systems. Insulation is not a suitable material to screw into for structural attachment. We only recommend the use of glue-down polycarbonate snow guards. Most polycarbonate snow guard models are compatible with these panels. The sole exception is the Snojax I, which must be secured with screws and is therefore incompatible with this panel as well. When opting for adhesive installation of polycarbonate models, using the industry-standard Surebond SB-190 adhesive is crucial. For optimal effectiveness, mount smaller snow guards between the minor ribs in the center of the panel. However, specific models like the Snojax II and Icejax II require a specific off-center placement, consistently straddling either the left or right minor rib.

Considerations for Adding Snow Guards to Exposed Fastener Metal Roof Panels by Exceptional Metals

Waterproofing Your Roof's Snow Guards

The correct application of silicone sealant is crucial when installing screw-mounted polycarbonate snow guards. Ensure the base is fully covered and press firmly to remove air pockets. While our metal snow guards come with waterproof gaskets, some installers add extra sealant around the guards' edges for protection, though this isn't required.

Matching Snow Guards to Your Roof's Color

Consider coordinating your snow guards with your roof color for a seamless look. Our ColorBar and SnoCleat systems allow for color strip inserts on the front faces. You can purchase these strips with the guards or create them from leftover roofing material on the job site. Alternatively, our pad-style metal snow guards and snow rail systems can be powder-coated to match your roof. Remember that powder coating may increase lead times, so consider local coating services or DIY painting upon arrival for quicker solutions.

Determining Your Roof's Snow Load Capacity

Knowing your roof's snow load capacity is crucial when choosing snow guards. Weather experts use historical data to establish ground snow loads for specific areas. Individual guards or screw-down rails usually suffice for regions with 45 PSF or less ground snow loads. However, areas with heavier snowfall require rail systems exclusively. You can obtain local snow load information from building plans or municipal authorities online.

Proper Anchoring of Snow Guards

It's essential to anchor mechanically mounted snow guards to a solid substrate securely. Aim for at least one inch of sturdy wood, such as plywood decking or purlins. On metal structures, attach directly to metal purlins when possible. Avoid relying solely on the roof panel for support. If additional support isn't feasible and snow loads are manageable, consider adhesive products for weaker underlying structures.

Strategic Placement of Snow Guards

Regardless of the snow guard type you choose, strategic positioning is crucial. For layout recommendations, it's best to consult manufacturer guidelines. We provide free spacing guides and custom quote request forms. Avoid installing snow guards only in isolated areas, leading to overloading and potential system failure.

Timing Your Adhesive Snow Guard Installation

Installation timing is critical for adhesive snow guards. In North America, late spring or early summer is typically ideal. Our preferred adhesive, Surebond SB190, needs about a month of temperatures above 50°F (10°C) to cure fully. While cold weather won't harm the adhesive, it will pause curing until warmer conditions return. After 24 hours, rain usually isn't an issue.
