Metal Snow Guards Info
Metal snow guards are typically made from materials like stainless steel, aluminum, or other durable metals. These materials are chosen for their strength, corrosion resistance, and longevity.
These are flat, rectangular, or square metal plates with upward-facing projections that hold the snow in place. There are also several decorative designs available. The SnowCatcher is made from a durable 16-gauge American Made 304 stainless steel and is available in a mill finish or can be powder coated to match the roof.
These are metal bars or fences that are mounted on the roof, creating a barrier to hold the snow. The SnoBar and ColorBar are available in both single bar and double bar options.
Proper installation is critical for the effectiveness of metal snow guards. The spacing and placement of the snow guards depend on factors such as the roof's pitch, local weather conditions, and the specific design of the snow guards. They are typically attached to the roof using screws, clamps, or other mechanical fasteners.
Metal snow guards are versatile and can be used with various roofing materials, including metal roofing, asphalt shingles, and slate. The attachment method may vary depending on the roofing material. It is important to note that some metal snow guards can be incompatible with certain types of metal roofs with dissimilar metals. Polycarbonate snow guards do not exhibit this problem.
Once installed, metal snow guards generally require minimal maintenance. However, periodic inspections should be conducted to ensure that the snow retention system remain securely attached and free from debris.
Metal snow guards, especially when made from stainless and aluminum materials, are known for their durability and ability to withstand harsh weather conditions. They are particularly effective in regions with heavy snowfall. We always recommend using our SnoBar and ColorBar on ground snow loads more than 45 PSF.
Metal snow guards can be customized to match the color and style of the roof, ensuring that they blend seamlessly with the overall aesthetics of the building while clear polycarbonate snow guards tend to remain practically invisible on any color metal roof.
By preventing snow and ice from falling in large sheets, metal snow guards and snow rails enhance safety by reducing the risk of injuries and damage to property below.
Metal Snow Guards Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Only install snow guards made of polycarbonate with adhesive. Our preferred glue, Surebond SB-190, etches itself into the material for the best possible hold. We never advise using adhesive to install metal pad-style snow guards. We offer a selection of metal snow guards that mount using clamps for standing seam panels or mechanical fasteners for screw-down panels.
The galvanized SnoBar, aluminum ColorBar, stainless steel SnowCatchers, and aluminum SnoCleats are all available in powder-coated finishes by special request. Customers desiring a color-matched system must provide a physical sample. After finding an appropriate color match, we will provide a custom quote. This process typically takes 1-2 business days. Production lead times for powder-coated orders generally range from 3 to 4 weeks. We do not keep color-matched snow guards in stock. Customers looking for a quicker or more affordable solution can purchase these products with a mill finish and either paint them or have them coated locally. The ColorBar also features a face that accepts a 2"-wide strip of flat metal roofing as an additional color-matching option.
NO! The primary function of any snow guard or rail system is to retain snow. Never use snow rails or snow guards as steps or tie-off points for fall protection. If you're searching for a quick and dependable fall prevention option, we suggest looking into the RidgePro.
When installed correctly, a snow rail system shouldn't cause roof leaks. Be sure to pair our foam gaskets with screws that have neoprene washers. Occasionally, some customers use neutral curing, cold-weather silicone to outline the mounting bracket's perimeter. But you are not required to complete this step.
When mounted on a standing seam roof, the SnoCleat RC and RCT snow guards, as well as the SnoBar and Colorbar rail systems, all come with cupped tip stainless steel set screws. These guards are held in place by a posi-lock attachment made possible by these set screws. This tried-and-true set screw design provides superior strength without panel penetration. Unlike the competition, which requires up to 150 in-lbs of torque, our cupped tip set screws only require 90 in-lbs (not foot-pounds) of torque.
