WindBar significantly increases wind uplift performance while reducing standing seam metal roof noise from high winds.

The WindBar system is a series of external purlins mounted with non-penetrating clamps and our patented Windstopper foot. WindBar significantly increases uplift performance while reducing metal roof noise from high winds. Once installed, a square bar spans between clamps, and the Windstopper is attached to the bar over the middle of the panel. The Windstopper foot then holds down the middle of the panel, preventing lift caused by negative wind pressure, which all roofs experience in any wind condition. This can be a great solution for metal roofs located in hurricane-prone areas.

The wind uplift performance of standing seam metal roofs can be increased by up to 300%, according to tests and research!

It has also been demonstrated that minimizing panel shaking during strong winds can cut metal roof noise by up to 95%. The only patented technology in the United States that combines noise reduction, premium snow retention performance, and higher wind uplift performance at this level is called WindBar.

Important Disclaimer:

This Wind Uplift prevention system is not designed to be installed in isolated areas such as just over doorways, stack pipes, chimneys or partial roof sections. In locations with winter precipitation, upper roofs, if any, must not be allowed to shed snow and ice on to lower roof areas where this product is being used. All upper roof areas must have a snow retention system in place before using this product on lower roof areas. Always obtain a manufacturers quantity and spacing recommendation before purchasing and installing this product. If this system is not used as per the manufacturers recommendation severe roof panel damage, personal injury and/or death may occur.

The following warranty is made in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied. Recommendations for proper use of the product are based on tests believed to be reliable. Any goods proven to be defective due to materials will be replaced, or purchase price refunded, but in no event shall the manufacturer be responsible for damages in excess of the purchase price. User shall determine the suitability of the product for its intended use and assumes all risks of its use or handling. 1. All loads incurred by the SnoBar will be transferred to the panels. Therefore, proper panel attachment to substrate/structure is necessary to prevent roof panels from sliding under snow load. New and existing structures must be evaluated to insure they can withstand retained snow loads. (In instances where there is an overhang at the eave edge, it is imperative to make sure that the overhang can hold the accumulated loading, otherwise the first row of SnoBar should occur at the bearing wall.) 2. It is not recommended to place the SnoBar System in isolated areas such as doorways, vents and partial roof areas. Please call for special design considerations in those areas. 3. Consider whether your roof system and/or substrates (felts or membranes) run the risk of ice damming with the addition of this type of system. 4. The SnoBar Clamp System requires the roof panel to be a min. of 24 GA. steel and have a seam height of at least 1". Clamp spacing cannot exceed 24"O.C. Clamp spacing varies dependign on seam spacing (12" o.c. up to 42" o.c). Clamps should be placed at every seam, so that the load is distributed evenly to every roof panel. It is not recommended to use a clamp type system when the roof uses a seperate seam cover or batten. 5. The U-Bracket System requires a purlin or structural support beneath it to mount to. 6. No snow retention system is capable of retaining 100% of snow and ice from falling off the roof. 7. Designer/Arhitect, Installer, or Owner of the project should have knowledge of the local snow loads, climatic conditions, roof slope, roof orientation, and roof design prior to installing SnoBar. 8. After considering the above factors, the determine lineal feet of SnoBar required is based on length of panels, roof slope, snow loading and areas needing protection from falling snow. (Call SnoBlox-SnoJax for clamp and bar loading values.) 9. It is the sole responsibility fo the Designer/Architect, Installer, or Owner to assess the suitability of using the SnoBar System based on the above design considerations. SnoBlox-SnoJax or any or its subsidiaries, or Riddell & Company, Inc and Action Manufacturing are under no liability if failure occurs from improper installation, improper set screw torque, improper panel attachment, improper roof system installation, improper use of the SnoBar system or under designed system placement of the SnoBar system. This is a special-order item, thus All Sales are Final. Sorry, no returns accepted.
SnoBar Snow Guards for Standing Seam Metal Roofs

WindBar Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The Windbar system is an external purlin for your standing seam metal roof. It adds uplift strength to new and existing metal roofs. The principle behind the WindBar system is the patented WindStopper foot. The bar spans between non-penetrating clamps placed on each seam, with devices mechanically fastened to the bar that extend down to the flats of the panel. The foot of this device, also known as the WindStopper, holds down the middle of the panel and prevents uplift under negative wind pressure. Uplift is a common issue with many standing seam roofs located in areas that experience high wind conditions. If left untreated, many of these buildings experience interior noise levels, making daily operations difficult.

One WindStopper per panel, centered, is needed for standing seam panels with seam spacing less than 18". Two WindStoppers per panel, uniformly placed, are required for panels with seam spacing of 18" to 24". Three WindStoppers per panel, equally placed, are required for panels with seam spacing greater than 24". WindStoppers rest against the panel and are only mechanically attached to the back of the bar. Do not mechanically mount the feet of the WindStoppers to the flats of the panel.

The WindBar system typically has more rows than the most robust snow retention design. It can, therefore, operate both ways. Several Antarctic research sites trust WindBar, which proudly demonstrates its efficiency for these two purposes. With gusts up to 200 mph, Antarctica experiences the highest sustained wind speeds of any continent. The main distinction between the SnoBar/ColorBar and WindBar systems is that the WindBar's WindStopper is required. The SnoBar/ColorBar's IceStopper is optional.

We include our 1" x 1" galvanized bars with Gatorshield coating in standard WindBar systems. Although the 2" extruded aluminum bar is an available option, we believe that given this system's robust design, it is often overkill and unnecessary. You must use the aluminum bar when the standing seam panels exceed 24 inches in width, and the area experiences typical winter precipitation.

Custom powder coating is available for WindBar systems at an additional cost. Accurate color matching typically requires a physical color sample. For information about pricing and availability, call us at 1-800-766-5291. We produce color-matched bar systems to order, taking three to four weeks to complete the production process. Customers can purchase a WindBar system in mill finish and spray paint it once it arrives or have it coated by a local coater if they prefer a speedier or more affordable route.

In contrast to our snow retaining rail systems, SnoBar and ColorBar, where the IceStoppers are optional, the WindStoppers are critical for the performance of a WindBar system and are a requirement. Although essentially the same thing, IceStoppers and Windstoppers have completely distinct uses in the two systems. The Windstopper attachments sit against the panel's flats and mechanically fasten to the back of the bar. Although the Windstopper feet are not mechanically attached to the panels, they exert pressure on the flats, pressing them firmly against the roof structure. When there are strong winds, this pressure stops the panels from flexing and vibrating.

About SnoBar-ColorBar

In 1992, Don Drew and Dick Riddell invented SnoBar, the original standing seam-mounted snow rail, earning a patent the following year. The first version, Sno Horse, was installed by Jim Huff at Denver International Airport in 1992. Inspired by office desk name plates, he ingeniously created an aluminum bar with a channel that could accept a strip of colored metal in its face. This design evolved into ColorBar, featuring rapid installation with patented drop-in clamps. Roof clamps, available in stainless steel or aluminum, secure the bar to standing seam metal roofs, making SnoBar the longest-standing snow rail system. There is a SnoBar and ColorBar snow retention system for every sloped roof prone to snow slides. Both snow rails can be powder-coated to match your metal roof.
