ColorBar Snow Retention is Safe for Standing Seam Metal Roofs

Aluminum ColorBar snow rails prevent rooftop avalanches, which can damage gutters, HVAC units, cars, and patios and cause injuries. Laboratory and long-term field testing have demonstrated the effectiveness of ColorBar.

Stainless Steel Standing Seam Mounting Clamps

This product's one-piece, top-loading stainless steel clamp is perfect for standing seam metal roofs. The ColorBar mounts to the seams with the interchangeable original drop-in SnoBar clamp, the first patented roof clamp for mounting snow rails to a standing seam metal roof. The clamp also features "cup-tipped" stainless steel screws, not slippery "round nose" screws. Don't believe the competitor's hype about cup-tipped screws; they require almost half the torque of round or oval-tipped screws and hold much better. Lower screw torque is less detrimental to the roof seams. Please see the basic clamp compatibility picture below.

ColorBar is a Continuous Snow Rail System

This continuous flat pipe-style design runs the length of the roof and ensures no risk of damaging roof seams with screws or holes. We include aluminum splice connectors to link the bar together when ordering more than one ColorBar.

ColorBar Has a Flat Face to Hold Snow and Ice

Our aluminum snow rail features a flat face, not a round face like other systems. The flat face of the snow bar holds snow much better than a round bar, which may let snow pass through it. When installed with optional IceStoppers, the ColorBar system is unrivaled!

Standing Seam ColorBar Features Unmatched Strength and Durability

The 6061-T6 aluminum ColorBar is structural, offering unbeatable strength and durability. Our sturdy ColorBar is 40 percent heavier than the leading competitor. This heavy-duty snow retention system is so strong that it can span 42-inch panel seams, which is unparalleled in the industry! .

Standing Seam Aluminum ColorBar is Easy to Install

Exclusive top-loading clamps and brackets make this the industry's fastest-installed system. There is no fumbling with loading parts onto the bar before installation; fewer parts mean less installation labor!

Clamp-On ColorBar Important Disclaimer:

Do not install this snow retention system on isolated roof areas, just over doorways, stack pipes, chimneys, or partial roof sections. Upper roofs, if any, must not be allowed to shed snow and ice onto lower roof areas with snow bars. Before using this product on lower roof areas, all upper roof areas must have a snow retention system. Never install a snow bar system beyond where the end wall and overhang connect. Always obtain a manufacturer's quantity and spacing recommendation before purchasing and installing this product. The installer of this system must carefully follow the manufacturer's installation and spacing recommendations. Not following the manufacturer's spacing and installation recommendations may result in severe roof panel damage, personal injury, or even death.

The following warranty is made in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied. Recommendations for proper use of the product are based on tests believed to be reliable. Any goods proven to be defective due to materials will be replaced, or purchase price refunded, but in no event shall the manufacturer be responsible for damages in excess of the purchase price. User shall determine the suitability of the product for its intended use and assumes all risks of its use or handling. 1. All loads incurred by the SnoBar will be transferred to the panels. Therefore, proper panel attachment to substrate/structure is necessary to prevent roof panels from sliding under snow load. New and existing structures must be evaluated to insure they can withstand retained snow loads. (In instances where there is an overhang at the eave edge, it is imperative to make sure that the overhang can hold the accumulated loading, otherwise the first row of SnoBar should occur at the bearing wall.) 2. It is not recommended to place the SnoBar System in isolated areas such as doorways, vents and partial roof areas. Please call for special design considerations in those areas. 3. Consider whether your roof system and/or substrates (felts or membranes) run the risk of ice damming with the addition of this type of system. 4. The SnoBar Clamp System requires the roof panel to be a min. of 24 GA. steel and have a seam height of at least 1". Clamp spacing cannot exceed 24"O.C. Clamp spacing varies dependign on seam spacing (12" o.c. up to 42" o.c). Clamps should be placed at every seam, so that the load is distributed evenly to every roof panel. It is not recommended to use a clamp type system when the roof uses a seperate seam cover or batten. 5. The U-Bracket System requires a purlin or structural support beneath it to mount to. 6. No snow retention system is capable of retaining 100% of snow and ice from falling off the roof. 7. Designer/Arhitect, Installer, or Owner of the project should have knowledge of the local snow loads, climatic conditions, roof slope, roof orientation, and roof design prior to installing SnoBar. 8. After considering the above factors, the determine lineal feet of SnoBar required is based on length of panels, roof slope, snow loading and areas needing protection from falling snow. (Call SnoBlox-SnoJax for clamp and bar loading values.) 9. It is the sole responsibility fo the Designer/Architect, Installer, or Owner to assess the suitability of using the SnoBar System based on the above design considerations. SnoBlox-SnoJax or any or its subsidiaries, or Riddell & Company, Inc and Action Manufacturing are under no liability if failure occurs from improper installation, improper set screw torque, improper panel attachment, improper roof system installation, improper use of the SnoBar system or under designed system placement of the SnoBar system. This is a special-order item, thus All Sales are Final. Sorry, no returns accepted.

SnoBar Snow Guards for Standing Seam Metal Roofs

ColorBar Standing Seam Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

IceStoppers are optional accessories designed for standing seam rail systems. These crucial add-ons attach to the back of the bar without penetrating the panel, preventing low-lying snow and ice from sliding underneath the rails. We highly recommend IceStoppers for areas with pedestrian or vehicle traffic. IceStoppers can also retrofit onto existing rail systems. For systems with seam spacing of 17" or less, one IceStopper per panel centered is sufficient. Systems with seam spacing between 18 "-24" require two IceStoppers per panel, spaced evenly. Panels wider than 24" need three IceStoppers per panel.

An effectively designed snow rail system often necessitates multiple rows up the roof slope to distribute the weight evenly. Variations in panel types, seam spacing, roof slopes, snow loads, and attachment methods can significantly influence the layout of a project. For more information, please consult our spacing guidelines charts or fill out the SnoBar Quote Request Form to request a quote.

The ColorBar clamps for standing seam metal roofing use cupped-tip stainless steel set screws that create a posi-lock attachment, securing the snow rails in place. This proven set screw design offers superior strength without penetrating the panel. Our cupped tip set screws only require 90 in-lbs of torque, compared to the competition, which often requires up to 150 in-lbs of torque.

The SnoBar system features a 1" x 1" square hollow tube of GatorShield-coated galvanized steel. In contrast, the ColorBar system uses an extruded 6061-T6 aluminum bar that can accept a color strip. You can order both systems online in a mill finish or by phone with a powder-coated finish. The ColorBar's superior strength allows it to span panels over 24 inches.

Our website offers 6-foot SnoBar and ColorBar kits in a mill finish, ready for immediate purchase. We provide 12-foot bars shipped in wooden crates via LTL for longer linear footage or custom powder-coated finishes. Our experts can offer price quotes for these systems within 24-48 hours.

About SnoBar-ColorBar

In 1992, Don Drew and Dick Riddell invented SnoBar, the original standing seam-mounted snow rail, earning a patent the following year. The first version, Sno Horse, was installed by Jim Huff at Denver International Airport in 1992. Inspired by office desk name plates, he ingeniously created an aluminum bar with a channel that could accept a strip of colored metal in its face. This design evolved into ColorBar, featuring rapid installation with patented drop-in clamps. Roof clamps, available in stainless steel or aluminum, secure the bar to standing seam metal roofs, making SnoBar the longest-standing snow rail system. There is a SnoBar and ColorBar snow retention system for every sloped roof prone to snow slides. Both snow rails can be powder-coated to match your metal roof.
