SnoBar Snow Rails are Gatorshield® Galvanized 16 Gauge Steel

SnoBar® is a hefty 16-gauge thick bar. The Gatorshield® coating applied to the SnoBar® adds 50% more zinc to the galvanizing process than traditional bars. It is so good that we warranty the SnoBar® against rust for the life of the building.

Screw Down SnoBar Snow Rail Finish Options

The SnoBar® is sold standard in a mill finish. It is optionally available in a stainless steel finish (please call for pricing). Both options offer superior corrosion resistance. SnoBar® can also be color-matched by powder coating the bar and brackets to match the roof (please call for pricing).

SnoBar Aluminum ColorBracket Mounting Solution

The manufacturer designed the screw-mounted SnoBar® specifically for installation on exposed fastener metal roofing panels. The patented drop-in aluminum ColorBracket allows the bar to be installed quickly without feeding parts through the SnoBar®. The ColorBracket includes a foam sealer pad. It has six holes predrilled in the base if extra screw attachment strength is required. Each ColorBracket comes with the minimum requirement of three screws per bracket. The slotted front face of the ColorBracket snow bar mounting devices enables a color strip to slide into the groove, helping it blend with the roof. The Tall ColorBracket fits most ribbed metal roof panels and is standard with this kit. Still, we offer a Short ColorBracket as an optional alternative for those preferring a shorter standing profile for panel rib heights lower than 1-1/16 inch.

Mounting Snow Bars on Screw-Down Roofs

Always secure snow bars on an exposed fastener metal roof system using a mounting bracket fastened to the structural support of the roof below rather than just the metal panel itself. Avoid using a snow bar mounting bracket that only attaches to the metal panel without fastening into the structural support below. Additionally, never use a folded piece of steel panel stitched to the ribs of a metal roof, as the metal panels are not strong enough to support the heavy weight of snow and ice associated with snow retention systems. Over time, attaching a snow retention system by stitching screws to the ribs of a metal roof panel may lead to leaks and negatively impact the roof system.

Screw Down Snow Bars Feature Great Strength and Durability

The SnoBar® screw-down mounted ColorBracket design allows the mounting bracket to double as a snow and ice-stopping mechanism.  This patented design eliminates adding extra ice stoppers to keep snow and ice from sliding under the bar. We have proven this product's strength through both laboratory and field testing.

Screw Down SnoBar Important Disclaimer:

Do not install this snow retention system on isolated roof areas, just over doorways, stack pipes, chimneys, or partial roof sections. Upper roofs, if any, must not be allowed to shed snow and ice onto lower roof areas with snow bars. Before using this product on lower roof areas, all upper roof areas must have a snow retention system. Never install a snow bar system beyond where the end wall and overhang connect. Always obtain a manufacturer's quantity and spacing recommendation before purchasing and installing this product. The installer of this system must carefully follow the manufacturer's installation and spacing recommendations. Not following the manufacturer's spacing and installation recommendations may result in severe roof panel damage, personal injury, or even death.

The following warranty is made in lieu of all other warranties expressed or implied. Recommendations for proper use of the product are based on tests believed to be reliable. Screw Down SnoBar Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

If you install a snow rail system correctly, roof leaks should not occur. Ensure you use screws with neoprene washers and pair them with our foam gaskets. Some customers opt to outline the perimeter of the colorbracket bases with a bead of neutral curing, cold weather silicone, but this step is not mandatory.

Gatorshield galvanized steel tubing is an enhanced version of the original Flo-Coat product. It utilizes the same cutting-edge manufacturing process but with a 50% increase in pure Western-grade zinc. It provides superior corrosion protection and allows you to easily paint or powder coat the tubes for aesthetic purposes, requiring minimal preparation. Additionally, the cold-forming method used to produce GatorShield results in bars with greater strength than rival products, typically exhibiting a yield strength of at least 50ksi and a tensile strength of 55ksi.

The SnoBar system features black plastic endcaps that seal the ends of the bars. These low-density polyethylene caps can withstand temperatures up to 150°F (66°C). They give the bars a clean, finished look while keeping out pests, rodents, and the environment. When field cuts are required, two caps per bar are needed to conceal the exposed cut edges on painted or powder-coated systems.

The fasteners for the Screw Down rail system are all self-tapping screws. These self-tapping tek screws secure the ColorBar to the back of the ColorBrackets. The same tek screws fasten the splice connectors between the ColorBars, creating a continuous run. Depending on the material of the roof structure and purlins, the ColorBrackets use either 1.5" Master Drillers (for metal purlins) or 2" Master Grippers (for wood purlins).

The ColorBrackets have six pre-drilled holes. These should face up the slope. A typical installation pattern uses three holes in an alternating "S" shape. You can add more screws to the remaining holes for extra holding strength. The additional mounting points are helpful when you can't attach them to purlins, and the only support is the wood decking. Snow rails must never be mechanically fastened only to the metal roof panels. Additional structure is required.

About SnoBar-ColorBar

In 1992, Don Drew and Dick Riddell invented SnoBar, the original standing seam-mounted snow rail, earning a patent the following year. The first version, Sno Horse, was installed by Jim Huff at Denver International Airport in 1992. Inspired by office desk name plates, he ingeniously created an aluminum bar with a channel that could accept a strip of colored metal in its face. This design evolved into ColorBar, featuring rapid installation with patented drop-in clamps. Roof clamps, available in stainless steel or aluminum, secure the bar to standing seam metal roofs, making SnoBar the longest-standing snow rail system. There is a SnoBar and ColorBar snow retention system for every sloped roof prone to snow slides. Both snow rails can be powder-coated to match your metal roof.
