Considerations for Adding Snow Guards to Exposed Fastener Roofs by Elevate (Firestone)

Enhancing Roof Aesthetics with Snow Retention Systems

Visual harmony is essential when integrating snow guards into your roof design. Customizable options like color-matched inserts or powder-coated finishes can ensure your snow retention system complements your roof's appearance. Explore local coating services or consider a DIY approach for a quick solution. However, professional powder coating may require additional time.

Optimizing Snow Guard Installation Timing

The installation of adhesive snow guards requires careful timing. In North America, the ideal window is typically during the warmer months of late spring or early summer. We recommend Surebond SB-190 adhesive for our snow guards. This timing allows the adhesive to set, requiring approximately 28 days of temperatures above 50°F for complete curing. While rain isn't a concern after the initial day, cold temperatures can impede the process.

Evaluating Roof Load Capacity for Snow

Ground snow load is an important consideration when selecting a snow retention system. It must be evaluated with the roof slope, panel length, roof material, supporting structure, and proposed layout. Projects with heavier snow conditions may require additional rows or a more robust rail-system design.

Waterproofing Techniques for Snow Guards

Proper application of silicone sealant is vital for screw-mounted polycarbonate snow guards. Press firmly to ensure thorough coverage of the base and eliminate air pockets. While metal guards and rail brackets typically include waterproof gaskets, some installers opt for additional sealant around the edges for extra protection, though this step is not required.

Strategic Placement for Optimal Snow Guard Performance

The effectiveness of snow guards heavily depends on their placement. Adhere to recommended guidelines for the most efficient arrangement. Refrain from concentrating guards in isolated areas like above entrances or walkways, which can overburden the system and lead to failure.

Secure Mounting Methods for Snow Guards

Proper attachment is crucial for mechanically mounted snow guards. Fasten mechanically mounted products through the roof panel and into a purlin, structural support, or at least 2-inch-thick wood blocking. Do not rely on the roof panel alone for support. Where adequate structure is unavailable, a compatible adhesive-mounted product may be considered if the panel provides a suitable flat bonding surface.
