Which snow guards work best with Gulf Coast Supply & Manufacturing's exposed-fastener steel roof panels?

Roofs with exposed fastener metal panels are susceptible to sudden snow and ice slides during winter.

The slick surface of metal roofing often causes snow and ice to slide off rapidly, posing risks to people, pets, and property below. To reduce these hazardous slides or avalanches, we made our snow retention products to suit a wide range of roof styles and materials. Customers can customize our snow guards and rail systems to fit different panel profiles, roof pitches, and climate conditions. We also offer valuable support tools, including blog articles, installation instructions, and updated compatibility charts for leading roofing manufacturers. In regions with frequent or heavy snow, these systems are essential for managing and safely controlling the release of snow and ice during the winter months.

Gulf Coast is recognized for its dedication to safety, integrity, and community involvement, serving customers ranging from architects and commercial builders to government organizations. The company also supports workforce training through initiatives like Contractor's Advantage™, ensuring consistent quality and service. Its products strike a balance between structural strength and visual appeal in coastal and inland projects. With decades of experience and a focus on customer satisfaction, Gulf Coast has established itself as a trusted name in metal roofing throughout the region.

GulfRib

GulfRib is an exposed fastener panel originally developed for agricultural use but now widely adopted in residential and commercial projects due to its durability and cost-effectiveness. It features a rib height of ¾ inch with major ribs spaced 9 inches apart, and provides a total coverage width of 36 inches. The panel is available in 29, 26, and 24 gauge steel and complies with ASTM A792 and A653 standards. GulfRib has undergone extensive testing, including UL 580 and UL 1897 for uplift resistance, FM 4471 for foot traffic durability, and ASTM E1592 for structural performance. It is certified under the Florida Product Approval system. This panel offers excellent versatility for snow guard installation, supporting a wide range of our systems and design preferences. It works with screw-mounted rail options such as SnoBar, ColorBar, and SnoCleat PBR, along with multiple stainless steel SnowCatcher designs like the Standard Rectangle, Fleur-de-lis, Sun Burst, Maple Leaf, Mustang, and Kodiak. Most polycarbonate snow guards can be installed with adhesive or screws, though the Snojax I requires screw mounting only. When using adhesive with polycarbonate guards, Surebond SB-190 is the recommended option. Still, do not apply it to metal pad-style guards. For best results, place smaller snow guards between the minor ribs in the center of the panel. Certain models, including Snojax II and Icejax II, must be positioned slightly off-center, straddling either the left or right minor rib or mesa. Snow guards and rail systems should never be attached to the high ribs; instead, fasten them through the flat areas of the panel and secure them to a solid substrate to ensure a safe and long-lasting installation.

5V Crimp

The 5V Crimp panel offers a classic architectural style often associated with traditional Florida homes. It features a rib height of 7/16 inch and provides a net coverage of 24 inches. Its distinctive double V ribs, spaced 12 inches apart, and concealed anti-siphon channel enhance both its visual appeal and water resistance. Available materials include 26 and 24-gauge steel or 0.032-inch aluminum, with finish options such as PVDF or mill finish. The panel meets several performance standards, including UL 580 (Class 90), UL 790 for fire resistance, UL 2218 (Class 4 impact rating), and UL 263. It is certified under Miami-Dade NOA (24-0625.01) and Florida Product Approval, qualifying it for use in both HVHZ and non-HVHZ zones. A minimum roof slope of 3 inches per 12 inches is required. The 5V Crimp is compatible with a variety of our snow retention solutions to match different needs and preferences. It is compatible with pad-style snow guards, including stainless steel SnowCatchers available in styles such as Standard, Sun Burst, Maple Leaf, Fleur-de-lis, Kodiak, and Mustang. Polycarbonate options like the SnoBlox Deuce, Icejax II, and SnoBlox Ace can be installed with either screws or adhesive to control snow and ice accumulation, while the Snojax I must always be screw-mounted and should not be adhered. For those wanting snow and ice to break into smaller, safer pieces as it sheds, the SnowBreaker and SnowBreaker 3M systems provide reliable control, enhancing safety for people and property. In regions with snow loads exceeding 45 psf or when customers desire a modern appearance, SnoBar and ColorBar rail systems offer a durable and effective solution. These systems utilize mechanically attached Tall ColorBrackets with butyl tape gaskets to ensure secure, efficient, and visually appealing snow and ice retention.

GulfPBR

GulfPBR is a heavy-duty R-panel designed for residential and commercial use, particularly where customers need longer spans and structural strength. It features a rib height of 1¼ inches with ribs spaced 12 inches apart, and offers a net coverage of 36 inches. Manufactured in 26 and 24-gauge steel, GulfPBR panels are compatible with AZ-50 and AZ-55 substrates and are available in PVDF finishes. The panel is certified under Florida Product Approval (FL34538.06-R3 for HVHZ and FL33818.06-R5 for non-HVHZ), meeting wind uplift and structural load requirements. Its design allows for spans up to 5 feet, making it a reliable option for demanding environments. This panel accommodates a wide range of our snow retention systems, offering flexibility in both material options and installation methods. Polycarbonate guards, such as the SnoBlox Deuce and SnowBreaker, are designed to mount between the panel's minor ribs. At the same time, metal products, like the SnoCleat PBR and all six SnowCatcher styles, must be screw-fastened to the flat center section. Other models, including the Snojax I and Icejax I, are intended to span the minor ribs, with the Icejax I offering either adhesive or screw attachment, whereas the Snojax I requires mechanical fastening only. The panel is also suited for use with Tall ColorBrackets. You can pair them with the aluminum ColorBar PBR or galvanized SnoBar PBR rail systems. This adaptability makes the panel a dependable choice for snow retention, delivering consistent performance in a wide range of weather conditions.

GulfWave

GulfWave is a classic corrugated metal panel designed for versatility across residential, light commercial, and architectural applications. It offers a net coverage of 29 inches in 26 or 24-gauge steel. The panel features a traditional 2.67 wave profile, making it suitable not only for roofing but also for interior accents and wainscoting. GulfWave is available in over 35 color options, including 20 ultra-fade-resistant PVDF finishes and a mill finish. It is compatible with AZ-50 and AZ-55 substrates and comes with warranties ranging from 25 to 50 years, depending on the finish. The panel meets Florida Product Approval standards (Approval No. 16646.4 for 26-gauge non-HVHZ installations over plywood). Approvals allow its use on roof slopes as low as 3 inches per 12 inches. Its lightweight design and flexible application make it a popular choice for both aesthetic and functional projects. The GulfWave Panel features a distinctive corrugated wave profile that stands out from conventional exposed fastener roofing systems. This design allows snow guards to be installed directly on the raised ribs, unlike typical roofing practices. For snow retention, the panel works with several compatible products. You can mount the SnoCleat 2.67 to the ribs using 3-inch screws. At the same time, the SnoBar and ColorBar systems are also effective options, both utilizing the same ColorBracket 2.67 as the SnoCleat 2.67. Each ColorBracket 2.67 offers six screw holes for increased mounting strength, although only four are necessary. In harsher weather conditions, use all six screws to provide maximum durability and reliability.

Considerations for Adding Snow Guards to Exposed Fastener Roofs by Gulf Coast Supply & Manufacturing

How Can I Coordinate Snow Guard Finishes with My Roof Design?

Choose finishes that complement the roof's overall color and style. Powder coating or custom inserts can improve the appearance and help the guards blend in. Professionally applied finishes tend to last longer, while DIY methods may be faster and less expensive.

When Is the Best Time to Install Adhesive Snow Guards?

Plan adhesive installations during warmer months, ideally late spring through early summer, when daytime temperatures remain above 50°F for several consecutive weeks. Heat is necessary for proper curing, while colder weather slows the process. Adhesives like SureBond SB-190 usually resist moisture within a day, reducing weather-related concerns.

Should I Test Fit Snow Guards Before Final Installation?

Laying out the guards before permanent fastening ensures proper spacing, alignment, and fit. This preliminary step facilitates easier adjustments, resulting in a more uniform and effective installation.

Should I Apply Sealant Under Screw-Mounted Snow Guards?

Adding a generous layer of sealant beneath screw-attached polycarbonate guards before securing them helps close gaps, strengthens waterproofing, and reduces the likelihood of leaks developing over time.

How Can I Fasten Snow Guards for Maximum Strength?

For the strongest attachment, secure guards directly into structural components such as rafters or purlins instead of depending only on roofing panels. Reinforcing supports or pairing with adhesives can further increase durability when needed.

What Snow Guard Solutions Work Best for Unique Roof Shapes?

Standard snow guards may not function well on curved, arched, or unusually shaped roofs. In these cases, choose products specifically designed for the roof type and confirm with the roof manufacturer that the selected guard is appropriate.

How Does Roofing Material Affect Snow Guard Placement?

The roof's material influences spacing and positioning. Softer metals, such as aluminum or copper, often require more rows and closer spacing. In comparison, stronger metals such as steel need less. Always verify that the guards, adhesives, or sealants are chemically compatible with the finish of the roof.
