Which snow guards work best with Bax-Steel exposed fastener metal roof panels?

During winter, metal roofs with exposed fasteners frequently undergo sudden slides or avalanches of snow and ice.

The smooth surface of metal roofing often allows snow and ice to slide off quickly, posing dangers to people, property, and even pets who may find themselves below. To help prevent these risks, our company offers a range of snow retention solutions suitable for various popular roofing types. Our selection includes snow guards and adaptable rail systems designed to work with different roof slopes, metal panel designs, and weather conditions. We are committed to supporting our customers by providing helpful resources, including detailed blog posts, straightforward installation guides, and regularly updated lists of compatible roofing manufacturers. In areas where heavy snowfall is common, these snow retention systems play a crucial role in minimizing the dangers of snow and ice accumulation, helping to ensure the safety of everyone and everything beneath the roof throughout the winter.

Exposed Fastener Metal Roof Panels by Bax-Steel

Founded in 1959 in Baxley, GA, Bax-Steel started with only two employees and a single production line dedicated to manufacturing steel framing for nearby construction projects. Over the years, the company has expanded significantly, becoming a prominent name in the pre-engineered building sector and earning a reputation for quality workmanship and outstanding customer service. Today, this dedication to excellence continues, as every team within Bax-Steel is committed to their craft and fostering strong, long-term connections with their clients.

Bax-Rib R Panel

The BAX-RIB, also known as the R Panel and manufactured by Bax-Steel, is a versatile metal panel suitable for roofing and wall applications. Unfortunately, Bax-Steel provides very little public information about this panel. Typically, an R panel features major ribs spaced 12 inches apart and approximately 1 1/4 inches high. Two smaller minor ribs will be evenly spaced between these large ribs to increase the panel's strength and rigidity. An average R Panel will cover 36 inches and come in various steel, aluminum, or copper gauges. You can choose from multiple color and coating options when you purchase a roof like this. Builders commonly use R Panels for vertical and horizontal wall applications in agricultural, industrial, residential, and commercial environments. These panels undergo testing to confirm their resistance to water and air penetration and often come with finish warranties. For more information on this particular panel, we recommend contacting Bax-Steel directly. See the Snow Guards Compatibility Chart for Bax-Steel Bax-Rib R Panel Screw Down Metal Roofing Panels.

This panel style is usually highly adaptable for installing snow guards, accommodating various needs and preferences. They are compatible with several types of snow guard systems, including screw-attached rail options like SnoBar, ColorBar, and SnoCleat PBR. Additionally, they work with our multiple stainless steel SnowCatcher designs, such as the Standard Rectangle, Fleur-de-lis, Sun Burst, Maple Leaf, Mustang, and Kodiak. Most of our polycarbonate snow guards can be mounted using either adhesive or screws; however, the Snojax I model must be installed with screws only. For adhesive applications with polycarbonate guards, we recommend Surebond SB-190. Still, this adhesive is unsuitable for metal pad-style snow guards. For optimal performance, place smaller snow guards between the minor ribs at the center of the panel. Some models, like Snojax II and Icejax II, require off-center installation, straddling either the left or right minor rib or mesa. It is essential to avoid attaching snow guards or rail systems directly to the high ribs; instead, fasten them through the flat, lower sections of the panel and secure them to a solid base for a reliable, long-lasting installation.

Considerations for Adding Snow Guards to Exposed Fastener Roofs by Bax-Steel

Install During Warm Temperatures for Adhesive Guards

When using adhesive-mounted snow guards, plan your installation for late spring or early summer, ensuring daytime highs stay above 50°F for several consecutive weeks. Warm weather is crucial for proper adhesive curing, as cooler temperatures can delay the process. Typically, the adhesive becomes water-resistant after 24 hours, so rainfall after this period shouldn't compromise the bond.

Test Placement Before Committing

Begin by temporarily positioning a few snow guards on the roof to evaluate their fit and compatibility. This preliminary step allows you to identify and resolve any alignment or installation issues before proceeding with the whole setup.

Select Guards for Unconventional Roof Designs

Traditional pad-style snow guards perform poorly on roofs with curves, arches, or unique designs. Instead, choose products specifically designed for these shapes to ensure effective snow management and protect your roofing. For tailored advice, consult the manufacturer of your roof panels.

Match Finishes to Roof Aesthetics

Select snow guards with finishes or coatings that complement your roof's color and style. Options such as powder-coating or custom color inserts help achieve a cohesive, visually pleasing appearance. While professional finishes offer greater durability, do-it-yourself alternatives may be more budget-friendly.

Secure Guards to Structural Elements

Attach snow guards directly to structural supports—such as rafters or metal purlins — for optimal stability, rather than just to the roofing panels. If your roof lacks sufficient support, consider reinforcing it or using specialized adhesives for added strength.

Adapt to Roofing Material

Adjust your snow guard layout based on the type of roofing material. Softer metals, such as copper or aluminum, generally require closer spacing and additional rows than sturdier options, like steel. Ensure that finishes or coatings are compatible to prevent adverse chemical reactions between dissimilar metals.

Use Sealant for Leak Prevention

When installing polycarbonate snow guards with screws, apply a sealant to the entire base of each guard. This practice helps seal gaps, enhances water resistance, and reduces the risk of leaks.
