PBM

The PBM panel is a versatile construction material for roofing, exterior walls, soffits, and liner panels across architectural, commercial, and industrial projects. It employs through-panel fastening and side lap installation, featuring ¾-inch tall ribs spaced 6 inches apart, providing a total coverage of 36 inches. Fabricated from 22, 24, or 26 gauge steel, these panels are available with either a Galvalume® coating or a painted finish, ensuring weather resistance for over 20 years. These panels are suitable for new construction and retrofit applications, covering roofs and interior and exterior walls. A slight waviness known as "oil-canning" may occur in these panels, which does not compromise their structural integrity or finish. A warranty covering material and paint finish for up to 20 years is available, though there is no weather-tightness warranty. See the Snow Guards Compatibility Chart for ACI Building Systems PBM Screw Down Metal Roofing Panels.

The PBM panel features a compact design with flat sections approximately 3 1/2" in width. Although this limited width might restrict some options, there remain several choices. The Ace, Icejax I, or Deuce polycarbonate snow guards are suitable for retaining snow and ice on their roofs. Conversely, if the intention is to facilitate a slower, more controlled shedding of snow and ice, the SnowBreaker or SnowBreaker 3M snow guards may be preferable. Each of these models mounts to the roof using screws or Surebond SB-190 adhesive. Furthermore, Tall ColorBrackets allow for the mechanical attachment of SnoBar and ColorBar systems to this panel.

PBR

PBR panels are highly adaptable metal panels used in architectural, commercial, and industrial environments for roofing, exterior walls, soffits, and liners. These panels feature 1-¼" tall major ribs spaced 12" apart, offering a coverage width of 36". These steel panels come in 22, 24, or 26-gauge options. They are available with either a Galvalume® coating or painted finishes, providing weather resistance lasting over 20 years. These panels are ideal for new construction and retrofitting projects, functioning effectively as roof coverings and for interior and exterior wall applications. The panels have a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi. ACI coats these panels with an aluminum/zinc alloy—AZ50 for painted finishes and AZ55 for unpainted ones. Manufacturers construct flashing and trim components from 24 or 26-gauge steel using the same coatings. The panels are secured to the panel using self-drilling screws, with specific fasteners designed for either steel or wood substrates and stitch screws for side lap connections. They use a 100% solid, asbestos-free butyl tape sealant for sealing metal lap joints. It can perform across a wide temperature range. PBR panels are available in various colors, including ACI 2000 and ACI 3000 options, with finishes provided by Sherwin-Williams® that come with extended warranties. Documentation for Energy Star, LEED, and material safety is available upon request. ACI advises routine maintenance to ensure longevity. The company offers a guarantee for the material and paint finish for up to 20 years. Still, it does not provide a weather-tightness warranty. Additionally, the panels have been tested according to ASTM E1592 standards and are associated with several UL construction numbers. You can install them vertically or horizontally, allowing customization with various coatings and colors. The PBR panel offers flexibility for the installation of snow guards, catering to various preferences and needs. These panels work with numerous snow guard models, including the screw-down SnoBar, ColorBar, SnoCleat PBR, and a selection of stainless steel SnowCatcher options. Available designs include Standard, Fleur-de-lis, Sun Burst, Maple Leaf, Mustang, and Kodiak. Most polycarbonate snow guard models can be attached to these panels using screws or adhesive, except the Snojax I, which requires mechanical fasteners for secure installation. For glue-down polycarbonate models, we recommend using Surebond SB-190 adhesive, specifically formulated to bond effectively with these materials. However, do not use this adhesive on metal pad-style snow guards. For optimal placement, smaller snow guards should be positioned centrally between the minor ribs of the panels. Specific models, such as the Snojax II and Icejax II, must be mounted off-center on the left or right minor rib, ensuring consistent placement over the same rib. It is crucial to avoid attaching individual snow guards or rail systems directly to the high ribs of the panel. The best installation approach is to screw through the low flats of the panel into a robust underlying structure, guaranteeing maximum strength and stability.

Superior Rib

ACI crafts the Superior Rib panel for roofing and exterior wall applications in architectural, commercial, residential, and industrial settings. It features trapezoidal ribs with an integrated water siphon channel designed to manage water effectively during severe weather conditions. The panel includes 3/4-inch tall major ribs spaced 9 inches apart, offering a total coverage of 36 inches. Fabricated from 26 or 29-gauge steel, these panels are coated with Galvalume® or painted to enhance weather resistance, ensuring durability for over 20 years. Manufacturers construct these panels from 26 or 29-gauge steel with a minimum yield strength of 80,000 psi, making them suitable for covering roofs and walls in new and retrofit projects. They coat these panels with an AZ50 aluminum/zinc alloy for painted finishes or AZ55 for unpainted finishes. Manufacturers make flashing and trim from 24 or 26-gauge steel, ensuring a minimum yield strength of 50,000 psi, and coat them similarly. The panels utilize a 100% solids, asbestos-free butyl tape sealant designed explicitly for metal lap joints, effective in temperatures ranging from -40º F to 200º F. Routine inspections of the roof, walls, flashings, gutters, and fasteners are necessary to maximize performance and longevity. Self-drilling steel screws with neoprene washers secure the panels to the secondary framing. In contrast, installers use stitch screws at the side laps. It's important to note that the panels may exhibit "oil-canning," a slight waviness that does not impact their structural integrity or finish. A material and paint finish warranty is available for up to 20 years. Still, the company does not offer a weather-tightness warranty. See the Snow Guards Compatibility Chart for ACI Building Systems Superior Rib Screw Down Metal Roofing Panels.

The Superior Rib Panel offers a variety of snow retention solutions tailored to different installation preferences and material options. For those who prefer polycarbonate choices, we recommend installing the SnoBlox Deuce and SnowBreaker models in the center spaces between the minor ribs. For metal-based alternatives, screw-mounted products like the SnoCleat PBR and six different SnowCatcher designs are best suited for installation in the panel's central flat area. Additional options include the Snojax I and Icejax I, designed to span the minor ribs between 9" sections. The Icejax I can be mounted using either adhesive or screws, while the Snojax I requires mechanical fastening only. To create a more comprehensive snow management system, pair the Superior Rib with Tall ColorBrackets and appropriate fasteners to support either aluminum ColorBar PBR or galvanized SnoBar PBR snow rail systems. This integrated approach ensures effective and reliable snow accumulation management, providing optimal performance in various weather conditions and environmental settings.

Considerations for Adding Snow Guards to Exposed Fastener Roofs by ACI Building Systems

Roof Aesthetics and Color Coordination

When choosing snow guards, it is beneficial to align their aesthetics with the roof's color scheme. Systems like ColorBar and SnoCleat offer options for color inserts that can be customized and ordered with the system or made from leftover roofing materials. Metal pad-style guards and rail systems can also be powder-coated to seamlessly match the roof's color. For quicker solutions, consider local coating services or DIY painting, as powder coating might delay delivery.

Effective Placement of Snow Guards

Proper placement of snow guards is vital for their effectiveness. Always refer to the our guidelines for optimal layout. Resources such as spacing guides and quote request forms are available on our website. To avoid system overload and failure, do not install snow guards in isolated spots like above doorways or walkways.

Evaluating Snow Load Capacity

Understanding your roof's snow load capacity is essential when choosing snow retention systems. Meteorologists use historical data to determine regional snow loads. Individual guards or screw-down rails are usually adequate for areas with ground snow loads of 45 PSF or less. Regions with heavier snowfall require rail systems.

Secure Anchorage for Snow Guards

Secure anchoring is crucial for mechanically mounted snow guards. They should be attached to a solid substrate with at least one inch of sturdy wood, such as plywood decking or purlins. For metal structures, attaching directly to metal purlins is preferred. Avoid relying solely on the roof panel for support. Adhesive products can be considered for less robust structures when additional reinforcement isn't possible.

Timing for Adhesive Snow Guard Installation

The timing of adhesive snow guard installation is essential. In North America, late spring or early summer is ideal. The recommended adhesive, Surebond SB190, needs about a month of temperatures above 50°F (10°C) to cure fully. Cold weather will pause the curing process, but rain is not a concern after 24 hours.

Waterproofing Snow Guards

When installing screw-mounted polycarbonate snow guards, a thorough application of silicone sealant is essential. Ensure complete coverage of the base and press firmly to eliminate air pockets. Although metal snow guards and rail brackets come with waterproof gaskets, some installers add sealant around the edges for additional protection, though it's not mandatory.
