Snow Guards for McElroy Metal

Snow guards for McElroy Metal roofing panels help control rooftop snow and ice release above entrances, walkways, driveways, equipment, vehicles, landscaping, and other areas where sliding snow can create damage or safety concerns. The correct SnoBlox-Snojax product depends on whether the roof uses a standing-seam concealed-fastener system or an exposed-fastener panel, and then on the exact McElroy Metal panel profile installed.

Compatible McElroy Metal snow retention options may include adhesive-mounted polycarbonate guards, screw-fastened guards, SnowCatcher products, 2.67 corrugated systems, PBR-style rail systems, non-penetrating clamp-on rail assemblies, RCB-3 rail systems, and clamp-on SnoCleat products, depending on the panel geometry.
  • McElroy Metal standing-seam and exposed-fastener panels require different snow-retention attachment methods.
  • Standing seam panels should use compatible clamp-on systems or adhesive-mounted guards, not screw-down attachments.
  • Exposed-fastener panels may accept glue-down, screw-down, SnowCatcher, PBR rail, or 2.67 corrugated systems, depending on rib shape and flat mounting area.
  • Batten-style standing seam panels require extra caution because the batten cap can prevent reliable clamp-on attachment.
  • Final product selection should account for roof slope, panel width, snow load, run length, roof material, panel striations, and full-roof layout requirements.
Important: Do not select snow guards based solely on appearance. A product that fits one McElroy Metal panel may not fit another. Clamp-on systems are intended only for compatible standing seam profiles, while exposed fastener panels may require adhesive bonding, screw-down attachment, PBR brackets, Tall ColorBrackets, or 2.67 corrugated brackets. Incorrect selection can reduce holding strength, create leak risks, or cause premature system failure.

⚡ McElroy Metal Primary Quick Selection Guide

Use this section for fast profile-level direction. Confirm the exact product fit in the full compatibility charts below.

  • 138T & 238T, Trap-Tee, and RidgeLine: Best matched with RCB-3 rail systems, 2-bar rail systems, and SnoCleat RCT. Use caution with glue-down guards on curved or heavily striated applications.
  • Instaloc, MasterLok, Maxima, and Medallion-Lok: Broad compatibility with adhesive-mounted guards, SnoBar/ColorBar standing seam rails, RCB-3 systems, 2-bar rails, and SnoCleat RC/RCT.
  • Medallion I and Medallion II: Best treated as adhesive-mounted polycarbonate guard applications on suitable flat roof surfaces. Clamp-on rail and cleat systems do not fit these batten-style panels.
  • Meridian Snap Together: Compatible with adhesive-mounted guards, but not shown as compatible with clamp-on rail or cleat systems because of the nail-strip style seam.
  • Mirage II: Limited compatibility. EcoJax, SnoBlox Deuce, and SnowBreaker are the primary options shown. Test fitting is especially important.
  • R-Panel, 5V, Max-Rib, Multi-Rib, and U-Panel: Support the widest exposed-fastener product range, including selected glue-down/screw-down guards, SnowCatcher options, SnoCleat PBR where applicable, and PBR-style rail systems.
  • Mega-Rib and Mesa: Narrower flat areas limit some products, but EcoJax, SnoBlox Deuce, SnowBreaker, and PBR-style rail systems remain compatible options.
  • Multi-Cor and M-Cor: Use SnoCleat 2.67, SnoBar 2.67, or ColorBar 2.67. Standard flat-mounted pad guards and PBR systems do not work.
  • Modern-Rib: We  do not recommend glue-down pad-style guards due to the striation pattern. Screw-down PBR-style systems are the compatible option.

About McElroy Metal Roofing Systems

McElroy Metal was founded in 1963 and has grown into a nationwide manufacturer of metal roofing and wall panels, with manufacturing locations, service centers, and Metal Mart stores across the United States. The company offers a wide range of panel products, including architectural standing-seam systems, batten-seam profiles, snap-together roofing, insulated panels, corrugated panels, and exposed-fastener roofing for residential, agricultural, commercial, and industrial projects. Because McElroy Metal panels vary by seam height, rib spacing, panel width, batten design, fastener method, and surface configuration, snow guard compatibility must be matched to the exact panel profile. This guide combines McElroy Metal's standing seam and exposed-fastener compatibility information into a single hub-style reference for choosing SnoBlox-Snojax snow guards and snow retention systems.

Snow Retention Solutions for McElroy Metal Roofing

McElroy Metal manufactures both concealed-fastener standing seam roof panels and exposed-fastener metal roof panels. Those roof styles do not manage snow retention the same way. Standing seam roofs typically require non-penetrating clamp-on systems when the seam shape allows it, or adhesive-mounted guards when the panel has a suitable flat bonding surface. Exposed-fastener panels may accept screw-down products when fastened through the low flats and into adequate structure.

See our full range of snow guards for metal roofs and use the charts below to confirm which SnoBlox-Snojax products fit each McElroy Metal panel. “YES” indicates the product is shown as a fit for that panel. “NO” means it is not shown as compatible for that profile.

Snow Guards for McElroy Metal Standing Seam Roof Panels

McElroy Metal standing seam profiles include 138T & 238T, Instaloc, MasterLok-90, MasterLok-FS, Maxima, Medallion I and II, Medallion-Lok, Meridian, Mirage II, Trap-Tee, and RidgeLine. The key differences are seam shape, whether the panel has a batten cap or nail-strip style edge, whether the roof is curved, and whether the pan provides a flat surface for adhesive-mounted guards.

Standing seam warning: Do not install screw-down snow guards through concealed-fastener standing-seam roof panels. Use compatible clamp-on products where the seam accepts them, or adhesive-mounted guards where a flat bonding surface is available.

Instaloc, MasterLok, Maxima, and Medallion-Lok offer the broadest standing seam compatibility, as they accept many adhesive-mounted guards and compatible clamp-on snow retention systems.

Medallion I and Medallion II are batten-style profiles, so clamp-on rail and cleat products do not work with them. Meridian supports adhesive-mounted guards but does not work with clamp-on systems. Mirage II has limited options and should be test fit before a full order.

Striated panels may require a heavier adhesive bed to fill small gaps and reduce moisture paths beneath the guard. If using a rail system, IceStopper attachments are recommended above pedestrian or parking areas to help manage snow and ice beneath the rail.

Snow Guards for McElroy Metal Exposed Fastener Roof Panels

McElroy Metal exposed fastener profiles include R-Panel, 5V, Max-Rib, Mega-Rib, Mesa, Modern-Rib, Multi-Cor and M-Cor, Multi-Rib, and U-Panel. These panels do not all provide the same rib spacing, high-rib shape, or low-flat mounting area, so compatibility changes significantly by profile.

Exposed fastener reminder: When screw-down snow guards or rails are compatible, they should be attached through the low flats of the panel and into adequate structure. The exception to this general rule is the 2.67 corrugated system for Multi-Cor and M-Cor panels.

R-Panel, 5V, Max-Rib, Multi-Rib, and U-Panel offer the broadest exposed-fastener compatibility because they provide usable mounting areas for several individual guards and rail systems.

Mega-Rib and Mesa require more careful product selection because of narrow or angled panel flats. Treat Modern-Rib as a screw-down application rather than a pad-style glue-down application, given its consistent striation pattern.

Multi-Cor and M-Cor are corrugated profiles and should use 2.67-specific systems. Standard flat pad guards and PBR-style products do not work with these corrugated panels.

Installation Notes for McElroy Metal Snow Guards

  • Layout matters: Plan for snow retention systems to span across the entire roof area, not just above doors, chimneys, or equipment.
  • Standing seam panels: Do not use screw-down products through concealed-fastener standing seam panels. Use compatible clamp-on systems or adhesive-mounted guards where appropriate.
  • Exposed fastener panels: Mechanically attached products must fasten into adequate structure, not only into the sheet metal panel.
  • Adhesive-mounted guards: Striated panels may require a thicker Surebond SB-190 adhesive bed to fill gaps and reduce moisture paths beneath the guard.
  • Rail systems: Consider IceStopper attachments when using SnoBar or ColorBar above pedestrian areas, parking areas, doorways, or other sensitive locations.
  • Test fitting: Order sample guards, clamps, brackets, or rail components before a full project when the panel profile or installation conditions are uncertain.

Snow Guards for McElroy Metal Roofing Panels – Compatibility & Installation FAQ

Compatible snow retention systems depend on the exact McElroy Metal panel profile installed. Some standing seam panels support clamp-on rail systems and cleats, while others support only adhesive-mounted snow guards. Exposed-fastener panels may accept screw-fastened guards, PBR-style rail systems, SnowCatcher devices, or corrugated 2.67 systems, depending on the panel shape and rib spacing.
No. Clamp-on snow retention systems only work on compatible standing seam profiles that safely accept mechanical clamping. Batten-style seams and certain curved profiles may not provide a secure attachment surface for clamp-on products.
Concealed-fastener standing seam roofs should not use screw-through snow guards installed through the seams. Compatible clamp-on systems or adhesive-mounted products are typically the correct solution depending on the roof panel design.
Many McElroy exposed-fastener roof panels are compatible with screw-fastened snow guards, SnoBar or ColorBar PBR rail systems, SnowCatcher devices, or individual polycarbonate snow guards. Corrugated panels may require specialized 2.67 systems designed specifically for corrugated roofing.
Panels that look similar may have completely different rib shapes, seam geometry, flat widths, or fastening methods. A snow guard system that fits one McElroy Metal panel may not fit another safely or correctly.
Yes, but only on compatible roof panels that provide an appropriate flat bonding surface. Some striated or heavily ribbed panels may not allow proper adhesive contact.
Most batten-style panels are limited to adhesive-mounted snow guards because the batten cap design can prevent reliable clamp attachment.
Standing seam roofs commonly use non-penetrating clamp-on systems or adhesive-mounted guards. In contrast, exposed-fastener roofs may use screw-fastened snow retention products installed through the panel flats into structural support.
No. Snow guards help manage snow and ice release by reducing sudden roof avalanches and encouraging controlled snow retention. Proper layout and engineering are still important.
Evaluate roof slope, snow load, roof length, panel type, attachment method, roof material, thermal movement, and the area below the roof edge before selecting a snow retention layout.
No. Corrugated profiles typically require specialized 2.67 corrugated systems designed for the roof panel's wave pattern.
You should install snow retention systems above walkways, entrances, loading zones, parking areas, landscaping, mechanical equipment, and other areas where sliding snow or ice could pose a hazard.
